Superhero Games

A superhero game is a game that features an action-based protagonist or antagonist that is ripped directly from the pages of the comic books that inspired it but this isn’t a necessity. Some of the best examples of a superhero game include the Spider-Man series on the PlayStation 4 as well as the Arkham games featuring Batman.

Typically putting players in the shoes of an iconic character, superhero games are only restrained by the conventions of the universe that they are setting down in the game world. This means that Spider-Man does things associated with that character.

While in the early days of the Nintendo Entertainment System such titles didn’t have to stick to the script when it came to outline and gameplay, typically the opposite is the case today and most superhero games stick closely to the formula established in some movie or other property.

Other games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed also use the basic expectations of a superhero game but do not necessarily place the gamer in the role of a protagonist. These games typically balance the god-like feelings that come from having superpowers with the very real vulnerabilities that come along with that.

This means that enemies are challenging and situations will often arise that make you use your full range of abilities in order to overcome the challenge. At its strongest definition, a superhero game makes you the superhero of your dreams and in its least application, it is simply a game that uses a superhero as the general guideline for a narrative and gameplay structure that may or may not adhere to the rules of that universe.
